Greetings All:
Well friends, the day is gradually drawing nearer to the big day (or night, rather) for Kitaro’s all night taiko event. If you need to review information for the event, please check the 7/16, 7/19 and 7/24 postings. The gallery page also has albums of the past 2007 and 2009 events with a couple of short video clips included as well.
The idea is to drum all night… well, not non-stop at least…. But just in case you think you can not take it come 02:00 or 03:00 a.m. and you just need to have that hour refresher snooze or whatever, you might want to consider packing a lightweight, compact tent and sleeping bag.
You are in mountainous terrain, so although you might think it nonsense down here in Tokyo to pack a light jacket, remember you are in mountainous terrain. And as the clock continues to tick east of midnight, it can surely become chilling, especially if you are actively drumming away.
Also because it is mountainous terrain, the weather can change like the weather (no pun intended), so you might want to bring a lightweight, compact, two-piece, upper and lower plastic rain suit or rain parka. For the same reason I usually pack a couple of them large 40L-sized garbage bags, (gomi bako) for waterproofing. As I learned my lesson in 2007 when there was a down pour burst for all of about 30 minutes (around 19:00-19:30 if I recollect) it is good to be able to ‘waterproof’ your backpack, tent, or whatever else you might be bringing. You will be in open terrrain for the most part with few places to conceal your paraphenalia from a down pour, or the bottom of your equipment which might get soaked as a result of a down pour. Hopefully there will not be inclement weather as such, and in 2009 we were blessed. It’s just wise and prudent to have a contingency plans.
so be sure to bring your own ‘bachi’ if you have them.
I strongly recommend a pair of work gloves or something of the sort with the beaded palm-grip type of gloves. You can usually find them in DIY shops or even the 100 yen shops for that matter.
Feel free to bring food and drink as you deem fit. Most likely I will pack a case of beer, sausages, and other snacks for the event. However, you are also responsible for cleaning up onyour garbage the following morning. One more good reason for having a 100yen shop, 10-pack of those 40 liter gomi bags.
Finally, if you have not seen the galleries of the previous 2007 and 2009 events they can be viewed on my
website’s gallery page along with a couple of short video clips as well.
I plan to bring my semi-professional Panasonic Lumix GH1 camera this year and capture moments of the event in not only imagery (= photos) but also video clips as well. I have about 50 video clips from last year, but were taken with a cheaper camera. If I have time to post some of those from 2009 and/or edit them into a presentable video, I will do so and send out a subsequent post.
Looking forward to a fun-filled 2010 event.
